Gus is is the former president of
the 100-plus member Rogue Chapter of the Oregon
Winegrowers Association. He was instrumental in
establishing a local Slow Food convivium last
year, and, as much as his winemaking allows, is
committed to activities that are supportive and
restorative of the Rogue Valley’s agricultural,
ecological and cultural heritage.
Gus and Julia live in the foothills above Ashland,
Oregon, in a tiny house which originally served,
in the late 1800’s, as headquarters for
the Ashland Mine. When they are not busy propping
up their home against the relentless pull of gravity,
they can be found taking walks with their two
rescued dogs, Fairnytickle and Hamish, or tending
to the multitude of growing things on their little
acreage, including a thirty-year-old dry-farmed
half-acre experimental vineyard whose fruit is
gratefully harvested each fall by a resident black
bear. Julia divides her working time between teaching
literature and writing at a local college, and
pursuing an ever-increasing passion for the visual
arts, pottery, and sculpture.
